3 Steps to Clear Clutter

So now that we’ve entered the 2nd month of this year, it’s a good time to review your goals to make sure you’re on track or do some clearing you meant to last month. Here are 3 great steps to clear clutter: 1. create ‘Plan of Action (PoA)’, 2. clear clutter, 3. maintain it.
Create a ‘Plan of Action (PoA)’ list
Take 1 room/area at a time, then focus on clearing that space or one specific task before moving on to the next on your ‘PoA’ list. The thought of taking on a big area/flat/house is overwhelming. As an example, if your study is disorganised, begin by organizing just the files, bookshelf or your desk top. A clear space is easier to work in.
As you clear, divide your items into 3 categories: keep, donate and throw. Place things that belong elsewhere in a box to move after you finish organizing this space/room, saving you time/energy moving back and forth. Maybe have 3 additional categories: recycle, repair, resale (re-using or selling some valuable items and receiving cash may make departing with them a bit easier).
Clear your Clutter
As you clean and clear, keep of list of what needs to be replaced or organized (e.g. finished/almost finished/broken items i.e. dried out highlighters/last notepad/broken punch need to be replaced so your routine is not hindered when you need it). Note items you need to stay organized i.e. folders/labels/storage boxes so you can stay organize to make life simpler, more productive. Your goal is to have a living space that you enjoy and supports your routine.
Keep it Clear
After all your organizing, manage the income of your clutter by allowing only what is useful or valuable (sentimentally or otherwise) into your space and that you have place for. Use the ‘1 in, 1 out’ principle - when you replace an item, throw out what you no longer need. Prevent clutter at the ’problem zones’ such as, the front door by having an in-tray for mail, basket for keys, coat hanger for hats/scarves/gloves etc., or a recycle bin at your desk or where you sort mail, to immediately throw unwanted junk mail or papers.
A key to stay ahead of clutter is to - have a ‘home’ for everything, return items to where they belong and only keep items that you use, light you up, or beautify your home. Procrastination tip: if you have trouble starting to clear clutter, commit to just 5 minutes, you’ll be amazed how much you accomplish and will probably do more! The trick is to just get started. Also, get rid of items that you may use ‘someday’. If it is needed then, you will get it ‘that day’ ;)

To your success!
