The source of happiness and success is self-esteem and self-confidence – self-management is how both the latter are obtained. Manage yourself to keep your goals on track. Here are 3 steps to self-management: 1. SMART goals, 2. Goal Setting Process, 3. Quarterly Follow-ups
Step 1: ‘SMART Goals’
S - Specific: What, where, how? Defines the goal with clarity
M - Measurable: From and until? Feedback on when the goal is completed
A – Assignable: Who? Needs to be assignable to specific person/group
R – Realistic: Feasible? Goals need to be attainable
T – Timely: When? Timeframes needs to be achievable
Step 2: Goal Setting Process
Define long term goals, medium term and short term goals e.g. in the nest 5 years what do you want to achieve? Then break it down so it’s not so overwhelming to achieve e.g. schedule monthly/ weekly/ daily tasks to follow up on and achieve your long term goals. This way you don’t lose sight of it J
Step 3: Quarterly Follow-ups
Once you know your yearly goals, check your level of progress quarterly. Share your goal with someone/group who will hold you accountable. Then share updates/photos/videos with them to monitor your progress and keep you motivated and on track. During these quarterly ‘check-ups’, if you’re off track: amend what’s necessary to get you back on track and/or if you’re on track: reward yourself for a job well done!
Tip: if you have trouble beginning to manage yourself, a key is to self-commit to schedule/implementing it within 24 hours (even just scheduling it helps).
